Portfolio Piece: Support Module

This piece was a collaboration with David Stanavich at Brooklyn Custom Metal Fabrication over the summer of 2010. We worked together to conceptualize the piece and develop 3-axis machining procedures. The part was designed as a support module for a multitude of applications, but the primary intent of this project was to establish new knowledge and develop a standard practice for machining parts similar to this one. We created a fixture to allow us to machine the part from multiple orientations so that we could achieve this complex form. The fixture itself was made up of multiple pieces and allowed us to flip and re-orient the part with out loosing a reference point to work off of during all machining operations. All finishing is done by the machine using progressively smaller depths of cut.
