Portfolio Piece: This Site

Since I was in middle school, I have enjoyed learning about the process of creating a website. My initial attraction to web design was rooted in the realization of how effective of a means of communication it is. The idea that a world wide network can distribute information from one locale to another in fractions of a second is an incredibly powerful tool. As I started learning HTML and how to use photo-editing programs to create graphics, it grew on me more and more - the nature of the newer means of communication opened up is mind blowing. I could go on and on about the doors the internets have opened and the fascinating culture, technology and inner workings of them. This site is one of the most clean-cut and visually simplistic sites I have created. I wanted to bring attention to my work rather then the site itself, yet still create a lively site that people can interact with. I designed the site from the ground up - layout, styling and the sparse graphic. One of the things I love about the web is the ability to integrate one system with another. For this site I used the Shadowbox JavaScript frame work for image viewing and Flowplayer for video playback. One of the downsides to there being so many different web browsers out there is that they don't all render sites exactly as you would expect. Firefox will render it one way, Safari another and Internet Explorer will do something downright stupid. None the less it is one of the most interesting, malleable and applicable mediums I have worked with.
